Joshua G. Barton, a 17-year-old Fort White High school student, died Tuesday after his car went off the road.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Barton was driving north on County Road 131 at 5:45 p.m., about a half mile south of County Road 240 and seven miles south of Lake City. The FHP reports that the car veered to the right onto the grassy shoulder, then swerved onto the road and back again. It spun to the right, hitting two trees and overturned.
Barton was going to a fundraising event a Lake City restaurant for the Fort White High School baseball team. Columbia County Sheriffs Office officials sent school resource officers to the restaurant to assist in notifying the driver's teammates and coaches of the crash.
CCSO also dispatched their Victim/Witness Coordinator to the scene of the crash to assist Troopers with the family of the driver, as they had arrived at the scene of the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this crash.
