A Welborn man was killed and a passenger on his motorcycle was seriously injured Sunday when a car turned in front of them in Marion County.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Thomas W. Akridge, 49, of Wellborn, was driving west on State Route 40 when a car made an improper turn in front of him. The car was attempting to turn onto S.W. 166 Court Road at 6:50 p.m.
Akridge attempted to avoid a collision and laid the bike on its right side, but the motorcycle hit the car. Akridge and his passenger, Wendy Coulter-Braden, 51, were thrown from the motorcycle.
Coulter-Braden was flown to Shands Hospital by Shands Cair helicopter for medical treatment of incapacitating injuries sustained during the crash. Akridge died at the scene of the crash.
The on-scene investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol determined that the driver of the car, Victor A. Nevola, 74, of Ocala, was impaired at the time of the crash and was arrested on the scene by Cpl. Daniel DeWeese.
Nevola refused treatment for minor injuries. He was taken to the Marion County Jail for booking on applicable DUI charges.
