Lake City Police report that a man who broke into a home was shot and is in critical condition.

On Sunday, October 21, at about 9:20 p.m., a black male broke into a residence on N.E. Lake Drive. The homeowner, who was watching TV, heard the man break a window and enter her bedroom.

The man cut himself on the glass window when crawling in and the homeowner armed herself with a handgun and started to exit through the back door.

As she tried to flee, the man began chasing her out of the house.

While fleeing from the intruder, she began screaming for help, yelling “Help! Help! Help! Help, me please” as heard by her neighbors. As she began running toward the road, she stopped saw the intruder still chasing her and she fired one shot at him, striking him once in the chest.

Mr. intruder ran out the backyard and over a wooden fence, dropping blood on the fence. He fled down the sidewalk leaving a blood trail. He collapsed on the doorstep of a neighbor, who was applying pressure to the gunshot wound when officers arrived.

The intruder was treated on-scene by Lifeguard EMS and transported to Shand U.F of Gainesville for surgery. At this time, he is listed in critical condition.

The crime scene was turned over to FDLE for investigation.

The suspect is identified as Milton Lee Barber, Jr., 26, of  946 N.E. Jenkins Lane, Lake City.

During the Lake City Police Department initial on-scene investigation, officers found several checks belonging to Deas, Bullard Properties, 672 S.E. Duval Street on the sidewalk when tracing Mr. Barber’s blood trail and one check inside the house he broke into. These checks were previously reported stolen by Deas, Bullard Properties when officers responded to a burglar alarm at 8:33 p.m. this same evening; just 50 minutes prior to the home invasion and is being investigated to determine Mr. Barber’s if Barber was involved. Entry was made at this location by breaking the glass window next to the front door.

Barber is a convicted felon and a registered sexual offender. Mr. Barber was also placed on probation by the State of Florida on July 11, 2012 for previous charges of burglary, battery and sexual assault, until July 2019.

Charges are pending.

Slime like this is why I'm glad I have guns in my house. Pity this thug made it to the hospital we could have saved the taxpayers a lot of wasted money.
